  • What You’ll Learn

  • Meet Your Teacher

  • Is it any good?

  • Complete dressmaking

During this six week, half a day a week course, you’ll learn how to make clothes from a commercial pattern. Bring a pattern of your choosing suited to your ability, and Maria will help you achieve a professional finish, guiding you through everything from how to insert zips to how to finish seams and hems.

    Pattern cutting

Are you a confident dressmaker who is frustrated by the fact that commercial patterns never fit in the right places? Then this is the course for you. Not only will you make a perfectly fitting bodice, sleeve and skirt block based on your own measurements, you will also produce a pattern of your own design, as well as learning how to manipulate patterns to create diverse styles. Please note that during this course you will be working in calico to make toiles. If you’d like to make an actual garment then take a look at the complete dressmaking course instead.

    One day professional techniques course

Spend an entire day learning how to sew a full range of seams including basic, curved, piped, under stitched and overlocked. You’ll also learn buttonholes, facings, tailors tacks, darts, under stitching, set-in sleeves, zips and bias binding. Maria will then explain when to use each of these techniques to achieve the best results for your garment.

  • Maria started making her own dresses at an early age and honed her skills at Kingston University, where she studied design. After graduating, she became the course leader for fashion at Chichester College, where she taught for ten years, and it’s there that she picked up the craft of pattern cutting. As well as being an incredible designer, pattern cutter and seamstress, Maria is also an excellent teacher, whose passion for sewing is infectious. She loves the entire process of creating a garment, from concept through to the craft of making it. More than anything, though, she loves that she too is always learning.
